THIRTY-ONE

Heading east into the rising sun was not the way I wanted to go, but we had no choice if we were going to flank the shooters.

Tommy and I had made good progress, heading first south now east toward the vehicles. We had seen nothing other than what was expected with the sun in our eyes. Tommy stopped at the sound of an explosion. It was difficult to tell from which direction it came. Then it was clear. A plume of black smoke was rising in the distance. Something was burning.

“A vehicle,” Tommy said.

I nodded, placing my phone to my ear. The call went unanswered.

We picked up speed, still staying south of the location of the vehicles until we could see bin Laden’s abandoned land cruisers. They were intact, so we continued toward the smoke until its source was in sight. Still in flames, one of our vehicles was turned over on its side. My God, I thought, six of the eight of us are dead.

Just then my phone rang. I hoped it was Williams calling back. The incoming number was from Raul’s phone. As I answered it, I had a sick feeling that either the dead were calling me, or our hunters were much more efficient than I thought possible. I tried Williams again, hoping for possible assistance. We knew we were on our own, but he might be able to provide a way out. The call went unanswered, and I decided to run. Not to stay and exact revenge on the ones who’d killed my best friends and the Afghanis who had earned my respect was the toughest decision of my life.

We moved away from the sight knowing the vehicles were no longer an option. Then we tossed my satellite phone in case someone was tracking us through it. Tommy kept his, but we pulled the battery rendering it useless for the time being. It took us almost twenty-four hours to make it 250 miles to Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad. We walked, hitched rides from locals, and even rode a bus packed with others who smelled like us. From Islamabad, the flights to Dubai to Bahrain to London and, finally, to Charlotte took another forty-eight hours.

All my calls and texts to Williams went unanswered, which pissed me off. I didn’t worry about it too much, knowing that once we were back on US soil I could make contact through Langley if necessary.

I spoke to Maria twice along the way, assuring her that I was still in love with her. I didn’t tell her about Rich and Larry or any of what we had done. I knew I’d do that once I took care of telling Rich’s and Larry’s widows what had happened. That scared me more than being shot at. Before Tommy and I arrived in Charlotte, we’d agreed that we were retiring from being bounty hunters.
